Advanced Korean at the cafe: object politely, ask indirectly, set conditions
Three short cafe scenes for learners who already handle everyday requests. Each scene contrasts expressions that look similar but change how polite, direct or conditional you sound. This focused practice set does not cover the whole advanced level, estimate a TOPIK score, or assess pronunciation.
- Point out a mistake politely
- Ask indirectly instead of telling
- Set conditions: (으)면, 거든 and 더라도
Three short cafe scenes
Scene 1: Point out a mistake politely
The scene: Your drink is not what you ordered, and the receipt shows an extra charge.
How it works
- (으)ㄴ/는 것 같은데요 frames a correction as your impression, so it does not sound like an accusation.
- 혹시 ~ 아닌가요? asks carefully about a possibility, “could it be that…?”.
- 거든요 adds background the listener may not know, often the reason behind what you just said.
Example sentences
-
Sorry, but I don’t think this is the drink I ordered.
-
Could it be that I was charged twice?
-
The receipt shows extra syrup, but I didn’t add any.
Review: Correct gently with 것 같은데요, check with 혹시 ~ 아닌가요?, and explain with 거든요.
Scene 2: Ask indirectly instead of telling
The scene: The music is loud, and you need a seat near a power outlet.
How it works
- Asking whether something is possible (주실 수 있을까요?) sounds softer than a direct request (주세요).
- (으)면 좋겠는데요 states a wish, “it would be nice if…”. Staff usually hear it as a gentle request.
- 혹시 ~ 있을까요? asks “is there, by any chance…?” without assuming the answer is yes.
Example sentences
-
Could you possibly turn the music down a little?
-
I’d like to move to a seat with an outlet. Is there one free, by any chance?
-
Could I get the Wi-Fi password?
Review: Soften by asking about possibility (주실 수 있을까요?), stating a wish (면 좋겠는데요) or checking (혹시 ~ 있을까요?).
Scene 3: Set conditions: (으)면, 거든 and 더라도
The scene: Your first choice may be sold out or slow, and you want to say what to do in each case.
Pattern: If · if/when (with a request) · even if
How it works
- (으)면 is the general “if” and works before any kind of clause.
- Conditional 거든 also means “if/when”, but the next clause must be a request, suggestion, intention or promise, not a plain statement.
- 더라도 means “even if”: the result stays the same whatever happens.
Example sentences
-
If there’s no cake, please give me a cookie.
-
If a seat opens up, please let me know right away.
-
Even if it’s a bit more expensive, I’ll have decaf.
Review: (으)면 = if · 거든 = if/when, followed by a request or intention · 더라도 = even if.
